I am the ecstatic owner of a Panasonic TC-L32X2 32-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with iPod Dock, so when it came time to look for a 42 inch set, I mostly confined my search to Panasonic. I had considered the previous version of this unit (TC-P42G25) because it was highly rated on Amazon, as well as slightly less expensive, but I decided to take a chance on the newer model–even though it’s so new that it has no ratings or reviews.
I ordered this TV on a Saturday and received it via delivery truck on Wednesday. Setup was painless (it is pretty heavy, though). I was pleasantly surprised to see that it supports Internet connectivity (although it wasn’t something I was looking for, the concept has really grown on me), but less pleasantly surprised to learn that the wireless dongle (Panasonic DY-WL10 Wireless LAN Adapter for select Panasonic Viera HDTVs and Blu-Ray Disc Players) is another $99. For that much, I think I’ll run a LAN cable. I’m using the three HDMI ports for my Verizon FIOS set top box, Apple TV 2, and JVC XVBP11 Blu-ray Player. A set of RCA audio/video inputs takes care of my Pioneer laserdisc player. (Yeah, I’m old school.) I don’t foresee using the SD card slot for anything but firmware updates, but I like having USB ports so we can watch our Flip movies in full HD glory. I was very happy with my LCD TV even in the middle of the day; maybe that’s why I never realized just how bright our living room is. The first time I tried to watch this TV from the couch, the reflection from the skylight was terrible. Around noon, the glare was nearly unbearable. |

This is not as large as you might think. I replaced my old Samsung 50″ plasma with this and the overall size is nearly the same. The difference is that the old plasmas have a very large thick bezel and this has a very thin boarder – thus reducing its overall size.
I have not had it that long so I have been holding off on writing a review. However, after seeing only one other inaccurate review, I had to chime in. I will draft something more complete once I have had this for a longer period of time. To be clear, this absolutely has full widescreen 16:9 capability. It is HD 1080p compliant. Some widescreen movies are shot in 2.35:1, so those will still have black bars at the top and bottom. Maybe this is what the other reviewer was referring to. The picture is very high quality here – much better than my old plasma. The blacks are very deep and I haven’t seen any real evidence of ghosting. The features on this are very full, but I don’t use this for much more than a simple monitor – I run everything through an AV receiver. I access Netflix and other web apps through my LG BD570 Network Blu-ray Disc Player. This is not 3D capable. Oh, by the way, a note on model numbers: The Samsung PN58C500 is really the same as the 550, but was released for Black Friday deals with a new model number and – I believe – one less HDMI input than the 550. I believe it is otherwise the same set as the 550. This is not last years model. Last years models had a B instead of a C in the model number, ie. PN58B. . . Also, according to the Samsung website, the special pricing available for this model only lasts until Nov 29. After that, who knows . . . probably goes up a dollar. |

| I researched TV’s A LONG TIME. I was between a 58/63 Samsung or Panasonic 65′s and then I came across this 60″ LG GEM. I really wanted the Panasonic TC-P65S1 but the black level problem did scare me a bit but I was still going to buy that TV until I came across this LG. I could not pass this up for $1500 and $700 (minimum) cheaper than the Panasonic or Samsungs. I found some other reviews on some AVS forums and I pulled the trigger. I was also disappointed that the price dropped 2 days later all the way down to something crazy like $1330 (which even at $1500 is a crazy, insane deal). Just a tip for all you wanting to save more money- I bought $500 Amazon gift cards on eBay using buy it now and bing/mr.rebates cashback (google this if you don’t know how it works, it’s awesome!) and saved an additional 13% which makes this even more of a steal! I am giving this TV an easy 5 stars but one thing I could see some giving it four. It does have some glare, if you absolutely need a TV without glare you may need to get another model or LED/LCD because this does show quite a bit of glare. I am lucky because I have mine in my basement with no glare issues but if a little light in the back comes on its a pretty intense glare, I could only imagine this in a bright room. But that is IT…. I will keep you updated as I have only had the TV a week and have been THOUROUGHLY impressed! (colors, black levels etc… I haven’t tested sound because I have it hooked up to a home theater as most should do anyways) If you are putting this in a basement or dark room, BUY NOW!!! | |
